Paperworld China 2018 upgrades structure with: “Stationery trends” and “Tomorrow’s office”

Paperworld China, Asia’s leading trade fair dedicated to the stationery and office supplies industries, will be held from 22 – 24 November at hall 5.2 of the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai). As of June, more than 300 renowned companies have confirmed their participation, including Guangdong Hualong Stationery, M&G COLIPU, Ningbo BEIFA, PILOT, Shenzhen Comix, Taiwan Lion Pencil, Umajirushi, ZEBRA, Zhejiang Guangbo and many more.

Held under the theme “Stationery trends. Tomorrow’s office”, the 2018 edition will be classified into four zones. Namely: Tomorrow’s Office, Stationery and Hobby, Quality Suppliers, and Oriental Products. The theme and structure are intended to reflect the transformations taking place in China’s stationery and office supplies industries, such as the acceleration in consumerism and the upcoming 2019 launch of a 5G network in China.

Alongside the new network launch, new technologies such as cloud computing, mobile office, VR conference, data security, and more will bring significant transformations to modern offices and their related supply sectors. Over the next five years, Paperworld China will work with quality industry players to display these new cutting-edge office concepts and products to the industry. A sample of what’s to come will be on display during the 2018 edition at the Tomorrow’s Office zone, where industry leaders such as Sunon Group, M&G COLIPU, and other leading brands will demonstrate new office concepts. They will also introduce concepts for office environments that are green, smart, shared and lifestyle friendly to the industry.

Consumer decision making patterns are also evolving. As younger generations become the dominant group for stationery consumption, the importance of product functionality is being replaced by brand image, appearance, originality and a host of other factors. At the same time, stationery stores, book stores and gift shops are undergoing significant transformations to provide better overall shopping experiences for their customers. Reflecting these trends at the fair will be the Small yet Beautiful showcase located at the Stationery and Hobby zone. The expanded showcase will scale 250sqm and serve as a mock retail store that includes a cafe area and an interactive art workshop. Also featured at the showcase will be adaptations of Zakka, a Japanese concept that describes a wide variety of miscellaneous consumer goods. Items on display will include Chinese stationery and related products for home office environments.

The speciality paper business of CPG will continue to operate separately and independently from Sappi until clearances from the authorities are obtained.

Graanul Invest adopts new automatic wood measurement system at its Latvian factories

Four Latvian wood pellet factories of Graanul Invest Group adopted the new bulk wood measurement system LoadMon, which enables measuring timber accurately and quickly, as the company said in the press release received by Lesprom Network.

The globally innovative LoadMon automatic roundwood or bulk wood measurement system has been successfully used in the Group’s factory situated in Imavere for over a year already. As the unique system that creates a 3D image of timber has proven its efficiency, all the Estonian factories of the Group have successfully adopted the system.

It is a solution where measuring is carried out with sensors installed on a gate and which create a point cloud or 3D image of the load in just a few minutes. Measurement results are not dependent on the human factor and are available to the parties in the electronic system following the measurement.

Bulk wood measurement systems have already been implemented in the Latvian factories Incukalns, Launkalne, Gulbene and Jekapbils, and the plan is to also adopt the new measurement system in the remaining two Latvian factories and the factory situated in Lithuania within a year.

Solenis acquires pulp and paper chemical distribution business from Connell Brothers

Solenis has completed the acquisition of the pulp and paper chemical distribution business from Connell Bros. Co. (CBC) in Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam.

All assets and business associated with the Solenis pulp and paper business represented by CBC in these countries are part of the deal, including inventory, accounts and field equipment. Additionally, CBC sales and technical personnel will be invited to transfer to Solenis, continuing the operation of the business.

“Southeast Asia is now a fast-growing pulp and papermaking territory and represents a significant growth opportunity for Solenis,” said John Panichella, president and CEO. “We have worked in close collaboration with the Connell Brothers Southeast Asia team for a number of years, so this is a logical next step in our desire to provide total solutions to our customers in this market.”

“We plan to continue to build strong business relationships with our customers in Southeast Asia and to position Solenis to better serve the pulp and paper market,” said Nandu Dhekne, vice president, Asia Pacific, Solenis.

“CBC is helping to manage a smooth transition for our longtime paper customers as we transition this business over to Solenis,” said Jeffrey Streblow, Senior Vice President, CBC.

The company’s product portfolio includes a broad array of process, functional and water treatment chemistries as well as state-of-the-art monitoring and control systems.

inShare ITC: Canada’s imports of newspaper are not harming the US industry

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) has unanimously voted that Canada’s imports of uncoated groundwood paper, or newsprint, are not harming the U.S. industry, according to Pulp&Paper Canada.

The ruling overrides the anti-dumping and countervailing duties imposed by the U.S. Commerce Department earlier this year and implies that all the affected Canadian producers will have their duties refunded to them.

Along with Resolute Forest Products, Kruger and others, B.C.’s Catalyst Paper was one of the Canadian companies hit with the duties over the past eight months.

B.C. Premier John Horgan and Bruce Ralston, minister of jobs, trade and technology, said, as quoted by Pulp&Paper Canada:  “Today’s ruling means that Catalyst will no longer have to pay these debilitating, unfair duties. We’re very pleased with the outcome and we’re glad the ITC has made the right decision based on the evidence before it. This is good news for people who work in the newsprint industry.

“The governments of B.C. and Canada demonstrated clearly during the investigation that they had not been subsidizing Catalyst’s operations, and we’re satisfied by today’s decision by the ITC.”

Neenah Coldenhove raises paper production

On the 3rd September 2018, Neenah Coldenhove added a fourth shift at its plant in Eerbeek; an important step for us that has marked another milestone in our history.

Arnoud Roelandse, CEO of Neenah Coldenhove: “This was a historical day for us as it showed how far we can go and it will motivate us to keep growing and improving.”

This decision has been necessary not only to help us catch up with the growing demand in our market, but also to allow us increasing our production capacity by 20%.

Thanks to our long-standing history, we have been able to accelerate our progress in the last couple of years. And we aim to increase that growth even more year by year. In 2019, Neenah Coldenhove is planning to move on to the fifth shift, which will allow us to reach full production capacity.

In prime position to tackle our future accomplishments, Neenah Coldenhove has celebrated this day together with the full team in Eerbeek.

New paper mill to be constructed in Eastern Germany

According to Euwid Paper, Progroup will build its new paper mill in Sandersdorf-Brehna near Bitterfeld in Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2019.

The investment amounts to a total of €375 million for the construction of the paper machine, according to Euwid. The machine will produce recycled fluting and testliner within the grammage range of 80 to 150 g/m2 with an annual output capacity of 750,000 t  and a working width of 9.20 m.

Kespry launches first drone-based aerial intelligence solution

Kespry announced the availability of the pulp and paper industry’s first drone-based aerial intelligence solution. The new industry-specific solution improves the profitability of pulp and paper operations by delivering more accurate and timely supply chain material inventory data, while improving site operations and safety.

“Measuring chip piles at a pulp mill has always been a challenge. In the past, a team of surveyors would climb onto the chip pile and arrive at a manual measurement,” said Mitch Dunlop, Accounting Manager, Celgar, a leading North American pulp and paper organization. “This method is slow, poses safety concerns and is not very accurate. Hiring a contractor for monthly surveys of the chip pile was not economically feasible. Having the Kespry drone onsite, we can survey the chip pile every month and we have more accurate inventory volume reporting.”

Kespry eliminates these issues by providing production plant managers with highly-accurate survey and inventory data across both production facility and round wood storage sites—data that matches the update frequency required to optimize profitability of supply chain, and more effective site planning
